Fritchey to host Property Tax Appeals Workshops

Lakeview Township Property Owners Can File Appeals On-Site

CHICAGO - Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey (D-12th), in conjunction with Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios, will host two property tax appeals workshops for property owners in Lakeview Township. Property owners can find their township on the upper-right corner of their property tax bill.

Workshop details are as follows:

DATE: Monday, April 16, 2012
TIME: 6:30 P.M.
WHERE: Sulzer Regional Library, 4455 N. Lincoln

Co-sponsored by 47th Ward Alderman Ameya Pawar and 47th Ward Democratic Committeeman Peter Coffey

DATE: Monday, April 23, 2012
TIME: 6:30 P.M.
WHERE: Saint Luke Church (Memorial Hall), 1500 W. Belmont
Co-sponsored by Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer and 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney

At the April 16, 2012 workshop, representatives from the Assessor's Office will also help taxpayers determine if they qualify for the Long-Time Occupant exemption and assist them in completing and filing the applications. The exemption application deadline is April 18, 2012.

To qualify for the Long-Time Occupant exemption for the taxable year 2011, the property owner must have:

  • Owned and occupied their residence from January 1, 2001, to January 1, 2011,
  • A total household income of $100,000 or less, and
  • An assessment increase for their property that was significant enough to exceed the maximum amounts set by the state legislature.
Taxpayers are asked to bring a copy of their most recent property tax bill, their 2010 Federal 1040 Income Tax form (if applying for the Long-Time Occupant exemption), and a valid state-issued ID.

"Properties in Chicago are being reassessed by the Assessor's Office this year, and if someone thinks their assessment is too high, I encourage them to appeal it," said Commissioner Fritchey. "These workshops will help them in that process."

The workshops are part of an ongoing series of workshops sponsored by Commissioner Fritchey to assist 12th District constituents who want to appeal their property taxes. Future workshops will be done by township as they open for appeals.
