German Cinema Now - Westwind

Doreen and Isabel are 17-year-old twins from rural Saxony in East Germany. The two are successful oarswomen practicing hard to be accepted at a renowned boarding school for athletes. In 1988, a year before the Berlin Wall came down, they have the chance to spend the summer at Lake Balaton in the Soviet satellite state of Hungary.

On their journey to the camp, they meet two boys from West Germany, Arne and Nico. Despite the camp rules, the four teenagers become friends. When Doreen inevitably falls in love and the end of their stay approaches, Arne asks her to flee to the West with him. Torn between her sister, who is still focused on training, and her personal life, Doreen has to make a tough decision jeopardizing the close bond that unites her to her twin.
