Hot Jazz in January! We will be warming things up a bit this month with the Christian Dillingham Quartet! Grammy Award-winning bassist, Christian Dillingham, is equally at home in two musical worlds. His parents spun jazz records around the house, while his mother was an avid pianist who loved to play Chopin and Debussy. These childhood experiences left a deep impression and ended up as the foundational philosophy of his career in music. Dillingham is that rare musician who excels in an orchestral setting, yet has an intuitive feel for nuance and the improvisational skills necessary to play jazz. The group will play tunes from his newly released album CASCADES.
Fiber artist Pat Kroth will be the featured visual artist of the evening. Here is a glimpse into Pat’s creative process:
"I create entire surfaces of color using fiber, and textural elements. Each work is then energetically machine-stitched. I truly feel that I am “painting” with fabric and thread. I incorporate fabrics with interesting texture, color, or personal significance to include in my work. I enjoy the multiplicity of meanings which invite the viewer to come closer. The process of gathering, making, and handling materials is an important element of my work. This led to the creation of a series of works, which may include tiny fragments, found objects, and sheer overlays. Sometimes the surface vibrates with colorful candy wrappers, found objects, or just the undulating exploration of color. Music, and/or personal experiences often provide the inspiration for my work. Cool jazz on a stormy winter night or perhaps a run or bicycle ride on a hot windy day, family, friends, a good book, a vivid lightning storm–any of these, all of these can become the catalyst for a new series of explorations."
