The Signal Fires, by Dani Shapiro
Signal Fires is a beautiful exploration of the connections between families and the reverberations of family secrets. The author, Dani Shapiro, helps readers imagine how each of the characters’ lives might have gone if things had turned out differently; and in turn, helps readers consider the same about their own lives. Shapiro also teases out the notion that maybe time does not happen chronologically but that our life’s events and memories are unfolding together - all around us, all at once, all the time. A thought-provoking book.

Long Life and Other Essays, Mary Oliver
If you enjoy Mary Oliver’s poetry, you will probably enjoy her prose. In this book, Oliver offers “little alleluias” to the bounties of nature, animals, the soul, place, and literature. She also includes some thoughtful essays on William Wordsworth, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. It’s a beautiful, inspirational, uplifting piece of literature.
