Theatre Y presents Stories of the Body

Theatre Y is pleased to present the world premiere collection of four one-acts, STORIES OF THE BODY, by András Visky.

Reuniting long-time collaborators Theatre Y Artistic Director Melissa Lorraine and Romanian-Hungarian playwright, poet, and essayist, Andras Visky, Stories of the Body, will be co-directed by Lorraine and Andrej Visky (his son), and designed by Péter Szabó. Two of the four one-acts will be performed in changing combinations on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and two Mondays at 7:30pm. All four plays will be performed on Sundays at 2pm in a new order every Sunday. There are 20 different ways to experience STORIES OF THE BODY. A detailed calendar can be found on our ticket site:

Visky's plays explore the themes of gender, justice, and trauma. The four plays are about the bodies of women in history.

Every single performance of Stories of the Body is presented FOR FREE thanks to the Free Theater Movement.

Introducing

“Lina”- A play based on the trauma of a friend, Lina is a whimsical exploration of the mutilated body, the moment a beautiful, capable body loses its mobility. This once-never-again-dancer excavates all that is beyond movement to learn the still dance of the dragonfly and the love and forgiveness that is still within reach. Lina is played by ensemble member and Suzuki ensemble trainer Laurie Roberts. It is directed by Melissa Lorraine.

"Eva"- A play based on an interview with a Hungarian sex worker located in Budapest. Born Roma, unwanted, abused, and sold, Eva struggles to claim a life of her own based on trust and dignity. This text explores the traumatized psyche of a true innocent who will redefine happiness if this world is determined to consume the weak. Eva is played by Theatre Y artistic director Melissa Lorraine and directed by Andej Visky.

"Theresa"- A play based on the life of Theresa of Calcutta, a modern Antigone, who felt a call to care for the unburied. This strange necrophilia, blinds her to the possibilities of living. When the soul eclipses the body, only to be left in cosmic silence, we face the terrifying possibility that a love for God can forsake all others. Theresa is played by ensemble member Katie Stimpson and directed by Melissa Lorraine.

"Artemisia"- A play based on the life of Artemisia Gentileschi, the first professional female painter of the Western world. She painted violent, revolutionary masterpieces amidst her father's public trial against Agostino Tassi, her art tutor and rapist. Her life and work became a rebellion against a society where a woman is considered property. Artemisia is played by ensemble member and managing director Katie Sherman and directed by Andrej Visky.

Water will be provided and drinks will be available for purchase on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Water and light snacks will be provided and there will be drinks available for purchase on Sundays.
