About the Role

The Controller is a key financial leader at Lawrence Hall, responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of our accounting operations. In this role, you'll oversee core functions like general ledger management, financial reporting, and audit coordination, while also guiding and supporting staff on the accounts payable team. You'll work closely with the CFO and leadership team to provide insights that support strategic decisions and long-term sustainability. In this role, you will:

  • Lead the month-end and year-end close process and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Oversee accounting operations including accounts payable, fixed assets, restricted funds, and general ledger.
  • Supervise and support accounts payable staff, promoting professional growth and accountability.
  • Use advanced Excel functions (including pivot tables) to analyze financial data and improve reporting tools.
  • Partner with the CFO to prepare for Board meetings, audits, and state and federal filings.
  • Coordinate the annual audit process and prepare the 990 tax return.
  • Monitor cash balances, ensure timely tax filings, and manage internal controls.

Who we're looking for

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Accounting
  • CPA certification
  • Minimum of five years of accounting experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to pass background and drug screening.
  • No history of child abuse or neglect.

Preferred:

  • A valid Illinois driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • At least one year in a nonprofit or social services environment.
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory experience.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, hybrid position based at our Francisco campus (4833 N. Francisco Ave.), with three days on-site and two days remote each week.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $117,000 to $123,000/year, based on experience.
  • Average of 17–25 days PTO + 9 holidays
