As you stroll past a certain food shop in Lincoln Square in the summer, you might not be aware that some folks are sitting on its roof, sipping craft beers, biting into spicy sausages, and possibly even looking down at you. To reach that delightful space, enter Gene’s Sausage Shop & Delicatessen, walk past the produce, and take the elevator up. As you head out onto the roof, you’ll be greeted by a big fiberglass cow. With its umbrella-shaded picnic tables, the eatery feels like a German biergarten that was somehow plopped down on top of a Chicago building: a piece of the Old World where you can escape for an hour or two, even as you look out across the city. 4750 N.
